Shipping Tips for Safely Packing & Sending your Artwork

Please read this shipping guide for tips on how to safely pack and ship your art.

How to package a framed print

A framed print should never be shipped with glass. The seller must replace the glass with protection or plexiglass. A mirror pack from a box supply store, U-Haul, Ryder Trucks or similar suppliers works well to package a framed print. Using a box which is inserted into another sleeved box so that the art is double wrapped is recommended. Use two layers of small bubble-sized plastic wrap and plenty of tape so there is no loose or empty space. Fill the space with filler, or foam peanuts. Consider cornstarch based biodegradable foam peanuts. For more valuable items you can always add a second mirror pack to make it larger or create your own custom box.

For very high end artwork we suggest professional crating or purchase of a wooden art-box.

How to package an unframed print which is still matted

The print should be removed from the old frame. Put clean white acid free tissue and cardboard over the image to protect it. Ship flat between masonite or similar sheets or in a mirror pack, see above. Allow two inches additional for making paper corners. You can also use 6” diameter construction tubes for shipping loosely rolled artwork. Do not crease.

How to package a print that is not framed or matted

You can unframe a print and remove it from its backing by cutting above the tape hinges on the back leaving the hinges on the print, don't peel them off the back of the print. Smaller prints may be shipped in a wide diameter shipping tube. Larger prints must be shipped in extra heavy shipping tubes or shipped flat. Or you can take them to a frame shop for a very reasonable fee.

How to package an original painting

The artwork should be mirror packed in a smaller mirror pack if not valued at more than $25,000. This is the insurable limit when using UPS. Other items above this price should be professionally crated and shipped by an art crater. There are many shipping and crating companies in different parts of the country.

How to package a sculpture

The best situation is to use the original box, which was probably a foam packed custom box. If you do not have the box we suggest packing the art in at least three layers of small bubble wrap and double boxing with the outside box being a heavy duty dispack.

Three Dimensional wall sculptures - Save and use the original sculpture boxes as they are very difficult to replace. Sellers must pay for the packaging. Buyers pay for the shipping Please note in your listing if you have the original packaging or not.

Oversized and Standing sculptures - Moving and shipping oversized sculptures is always a challenge but we can offer you guidance with this process. Sellers pay crating, buyers pay shipping & moving.

Lucite Sculptures - Its best if you have the original box, please note in your listings if you do not have the original box. The sculpture can be inspected with a flashlight for small scratches and imperfections. Sellers if there is a problem, please disclose prior to sale. Sculptures can be cleaned and polished. These sculptures must be wrapped in a clean soft cotton pillowcase and double bubble-wrapped and double boxed, We can refer you to cleaning and restoration if necessary.

Again, Please disclose any problems when listing your item for sale.

Save money - Recycle Shipping Materials (reusing boxes and tubes)

Reusing boxes and tubes is ecologically sane. Make sure they are clean and not worn. Don't forget to remove the old labels and barcodes. UPS and FedEx have online shipping tips.

Shipping Insurance

The seller ships the artwork to the buyer at Buyer’s expense with full coverage insurance. The art is shipped directly to the buyer to save on shipping costs. Artwork should never be refused unless the seller has misrepresented the condition. In such cases, the seller pays return shipping and buyer’s shipping. Sellers must disclose any imperfections in their listings.

Shipping Options

FedEx - Does not insure art, so you should not use them as your shipper.

UPS will insure up to $25,000. You must package the art well, ship no glass, and be prepared to validate your claim if damaged. Have UPS pick-up or go to main office. Don’t use UPS franchises!

DHL will ship overseas, UPS is preferred. Professional Art Craters & Shippers - are a must for high value art. There are several local and international shippers available. Many buyers and sellers are internationally located.
